How we designed the Home Plate fidget
The finished fidget looks simple: a familiar five-sided outline made from independently moving nested layers. The difficult part was keeping that outline recognizable while giving every layer room to shift, fan, tilt, and cascade.

The design problem
Circles and regular polygons can grow through parallel offsets while maintaining a consistent wall-and-gap relationship. Home Plate is different. Its asymmetric five-sided profile narrows toward a point, and repeated strict offsets caused the center of the nested construction to collapse.
Our generator therefore gives Home Plate its own growth strategy. Each layer grows from the same center using a clearance-aware scale, preserving the 17:17 profile construction instead of forcing the circle's method onto a different shape.
This is why shape is part of the mechanism. A silhouette that looks right from the outside can still need different internal math to move correctly.

The production assortment offers these geometries in all white or a black outer border with white inner layers. Size and finish availability comes from the current product catalog.
CAD was not the production gate
1. Geometry
Build and inspect
The generator checked the intended profile, layer count, attachment choice, and output structure. That established what the model contained, not how a print felt.
2. Print
Test every geometry
Pocket, Pocket Loop, Classic, and XL Desk each received a recorded physical pass on July 31, 2026. A pass for one size did not automatically approve the others.
3. Promote
Lock the tested files
Only the hash-matched, physically tested variants moved into the production directory. The product catalog records the Home Plate fidget as launched on August 2, 2026.
What the evidence does and does not say
- It does say: the four listed production geometries were physically printed and passed the recorded promotion gate.
- It does say: Home Plate uses a different growth strategy than a circle or regular polygon.
- It does not say: every experimental Home Plate file, printer project, or future size inherits those results.
- It does not say: a CAD render or slicer preview proves that a new variant will print or feel right.
The maker still makes the final call
Code can check dimensions and relationships. CAD can show the geometry from every angle. AI tools can suggest alternatives and look for contradictions. None of those tools can replace holding the exact print and deciding whether its motion, size, and appearance work together.
This development record predates any YouTube reconstruction of the process. A future video may use AI-assisted diagrams or narration to explain the work, but it should not pretend that an already-launched product was invented live for the camera.
